Welcome to the 2016-17 school year at Thatcher Brook Primary School.
We are excited for another great year ahead as we embark on a new administrative team structure. Denise Goodnow’s title has changed to Principal, TBPS and she is in charge of the day to day operation of the school and all regular education. Stephanie Hudak’s title is Principal, Waterbury-Duxbury School District and her duties are split between TBPS and CBMS with the primary responsibility of special education and the transitioning of students through our system. We want to take this opportunity to welcome students and families back to TBPS and to remind returning families and inform new families about some basic information and expectations.
School begins everyday at 7:50 a.m. and dismissal is at 2:45 p.m. If your child arrives after 7:50 a.m. they are considered tardy and are required to check in at the office upon arrival to obtain a slip that will notify their teacher that they have checked in and will be changed from absent to tardy. School starts promptly at 7:50 with many classes holding morning meetings to promote and reinforce the social curriculum. It is extremely important that each child be here on time so that he/she can participate in these activities. If your child will be absent or arriving after 8:15 a.m, we ask that you call us to let us know. If you do not have an opportunity, we will call home by 9:30 a.m. or earlier if possible.
We are rolling out a new end of the day pickup/bus changes online application with more information to follow. If you need to pick up your child(ren) early for appointments or other events come to the office first to get a dismissal pass for your child. Classroom teachers will not dismiss students unless they have a dismissal pass. If you can let us know ahead of time that your child needs to leave early, we will do our best to have your child(ren) ready when you arrive.
Parents and visitors will need to be buzzed into the building if they are arriving during the school day. One of our office staff will be able to see via camera and communicate with visitors via intercom. Please proceed directly to the office to sign in, using the iPad application Envoy & then sign out again when you leave.
Every school year brings new faces. Christian Guggemos, although not a new face to some, has joined us to fill Alison Figdor’s one year leave of absence. Christine Paluga, former UVM intern in Sonja Burbank’s class, has been hired to teach third grade in the south building. Tom Thurston has moved from 3/4 to a 1/2 classroom while Amy Kahofer has moved to Kindergarten. Lizzy Carlson joins the Integrated Arts team as the new Music teacher and Megan Libby joins our staff as a paraprofessional.
In an effort to remain consistent with our procedures and maintain safety for our students, we are asking that all parents who drop off or pick up in the circle abide by the following rules:
- Please have your child exit and enter your vehicle on the curb side when picking up and dropping off.
- Please do not park in the drop off circle or leave your vehicle running in the circle.
- The drop off/pick up loop is one lane only (as was implemented last spring).
- If you are escorting your child into the building, we ask that you park in the back parking lot (accessible via High Street) and enter from this side of the building, so as not to disrupt the flow in the circle.
We will continue to send out our FYIs to parents via Blackboard Connect every Friday night. They will also be posted online in the weekly TBPS Admin blog post (linked here). These emails contain important news and or other community information relevant to Waterbury/Duxbury families. For families without internet access we are happy to send out these communications in an alternate format upon request. You will need to subscribe to the blog using your email address. In addition to the blog, you can now follow Thatcher Brook Primary School on Facebook and Twitter @TBPSVT.
Our handbook provides additional information regarding our school procedures and expectations. It is accessible via our school’s website http://tbps.wwsu.org. As always, we welcome feedback and encourage parent involvement in all aspects of your child’s education. We look forward to working with all families to ensure success for every TBPS student.
We will kick off the year with the PTO’s Ice Cream Social on Friday, September 9 at 6:00 p.m. on the playground.
