Our first week is complete and things went relatively smoothly from 7:30-2:35. As we all came to realize pretty quickly - busing had some challenges. We managed through the challenges and have gone to a schedule very similar to last year’s.
All of the Kindergarten classes have lunch together and that has gone very well the first four days of school. Those of us on duty are teaching the children what we expect to see at lunch in terms of behavior and manners and they have all responded very positively.
Arrival/Drop off Reminder:
Children may begin arriving as early as 7:30 a.m. There is no adult supervision prior to 7:30 a.m.
Formal instruction starts at 7:50 a.m. Children are tardy if they arrive after 7:50 a.m and must report to the office for a pass to class.

Parents, we ask that you do not send in medication with your student in their backpacks. This is a safety risk for all students.
Please contact the nurse if you have any concerns or questions.
Our school's website has a new Health link on the homepage. Please feel free to browse the site for helpful information related to your child's health.
As you work your child into the back-to-school routine, please help your child to get adequate sleep (10 hours per night) and ensure your child has breakfast - either at home or at school. Establishing these routines, along with getting to school on time in the morning, will help your child throughout the day.
Mileage Club begins on Monday, August 31 and runs from 7:30-7:50 in the gym every morning before school.
Thatcher Brook Primary School’s summer school program (Eagle Academy) was well attended by 40 students the first two weeks of August. They were all well fed thanks to the efforts of Karol Smith & Gale Badeau at the Waterbury Area Senior Center (WASC). The WASC staff & volunteers Richard White, Melvin Quesnel, Phil Walbridge, and Barb Lavanway provided TBPS’s Eagle Academy with delicious breakfasts & lunches every day. Thank you very much for your efforts. Chad Ummel and the Waterbury Selectboard graciously allowed the Eagle Academy participants to access the Waterbury Pool on our final day of summer school. It was a wonderful way to wrap up our two weeks together on a hot summer afternoon. Thank you to all who supported our Eagle Academy this summer – community members, staff, families, and students!!!
After lots of community feedback, together with our own observations of the new bus system “in action” yesterday, combined with lengthy conversations with the WWSU Business Office & First Student Bus Service, the decision has been made to alter the new “CBMS Hub” model and to revert back to last year’s afternoon bus routes/schedules. Ultimately, this decision came down to the very core of our decision making- what’s best for our students, especially our youngest students in the WDSD. At TBPS, as was the case last year, Buses 9 & 1 will be “late” buses and students will be supervised by two TBPS staff members until those buses arrive. At CBMS, we will have the same “3:00 bus” runs as we have had in the past, and the 5:00 late bus will remain at a 5:00 departure from HUHS and 5:15 departure from CBMS.
Although this may sound like a simple change to make, it actually involves significant alterations to both the bus schedules and to the 2015-16 daily schedules at both TBPS & CBMS. We will rework those schedules in the next two days and the revised system will begin with the afternoon bus run on Monday, August 31st. For the rest of this week, we offer our sincere apologies in advance for the much, much less than ideal system. We have made a few minor tweaks which should help a bit, but the system with CBMS as the hub will still equate to congestion for the remaining days this week. Your patience and understanding is most appreciated. Revised bus schedules will be posted by the end of this week on theWWSU,CBMS, andTBPS websites.
Beginning Monday, August 31, dismissal will be as follows:
CBMS @ 2:30PM
TBPS @ 2:45PM
At TBPS, as was the case last year, Buses 9 & 1 will be “late” buses and students will be supervised by two TBPS staff members until those buses arrive.
Thatcher Brook Primary School staff came back to school last
Friday for a day filled with reconnecting, reflecting and preparing for the
work ahead. We discussed our summer reading of the book Mindset: The New
Psychology of Success (see http://mindsetonline.com/whatisit/about/index.html
for more information) and re-invigorated our shared commitment to working with
our students at TBPS.
Today we engaged in training around how trauma affects
children, presented by Joelle van Lent a
developmental psychologist. I think I
can speak for all of us when I say that we all feel like we have a few more
tools in our toolbox when it comes to working with children.
Tomorrow we welcome almost 400 students to the 2015-16
school year here at TBPS. We are all excited about the work ahead and the
possibilities that lie before us. This

As we prepare for the 2015 2016 school year, Thatcher Brook Primary School and the Washington West Supervisory Union are committed to providing all students an engaging and high quality education. This commitment requires professional learning that is ongoing and collaborative across all schools in our supervisory union.
In order to allow for the continuation of ongoing professional learning, and be responsive to community concerns about the early release days, we have aligned our daily school schedules across the supervisory union. As a result collaborative professional learning will be built into the work day without disruption to student schedules. Staff across WWSU schools will meet regularly after the school day to support ongoing professional development and sharing of resources instead of during the Early Release Days we have provided in the past.
To achieve this alignment Thatcher Brook Primary School has shifted its dismissal time to match those of the other elementary schools. Beginning with the first day of school Tuesday, August 25, 2015 TBPS will be dismissing all students at 2:35pm. This change in schedule not only supports professional work, but also resolves busing issues that existed in several of our schools, creating a more efficient and sustainable system. We appreciate that these changes, while benefiting our overall system, will have a variety of effects upon our families. After-school programming at TBPS will adjust to this new schedule. Revised bus routes will be sent out in the next few weeks.
We are committed to supporting strong learning outcomes and success for every one of our students and look forward to the more regular, and less disruptive, professional work sustained by this new schedule.
