2014-15 School Year in Review

With the 2014-15 school year in the rear view mirror it is time to reflect. On Monday, June 15th we celebrated the learning of our 71 fourth graders. The Celebration of Learning is a longstanding tradition at Thatcher Brook Primary School which brings together the school and community to recognize our 4th graders as they head off to Crossett Brook Middle School. The celebration not only recognizes our 4th graders but also subtly honors the hard working staff at TBPS who have supported these, and all our students, during their time here.
The year was jam-packed full of activities & learning in every nook and cranny of these old historic buildings. We kicked off the year with the PTO hosting the annual Ice Cream Social for TBPS students & their families. Grade level Back to School Nights happened building-wide during the month of September. A student council was established giving 3rd & 4th grade students a voice. Twelve of our classes received New England Dairy Council grants and explored the farm to school connection in the greater Waterbury area.
Early winter brought the 5th annual River of Light lantern parade to Waterbury led by our very own MK Monley, TBPS art teacher, and Gowri Savoor, local artist. Our students made lanterns of local landmarks and marched in the parade along with community members. Many lanterns from previous years also shined brightly on the parade route. See photos and more details by clicking here. During our annual Cultural Arts Week we studied Oceania and its many island nations.
Spring, when it finally arrived, brought over 50 wide-eyed three & four year olds in Waterbury/Duxbury in for preschool registration & screening. After school programs such as Odyssey of the Mind and Girls on the Run wrapped up their seasons with culminating events at the state level. Spring concerts and the Maypole dance highlighted the musicality of all of our students.
During the school year there are times when it seems as if we are moving in slow motion and then TA DA the end of year is here. Summer is upon us and it affords us all time to reflect, relax, and refuel. Happy summer adventures to all!!
